Norton AntiVirus Email Problems

How to resolve POproxy.exe timing conflicts

Situation:
When you enable Norton AntiVirus 2000 (NAV) email protection, an entry is made in the Windows registry that starts the POProxy.exe program each time that Windows starts. Sometimes another program can interfere with POProxy.exe loading at startup. This type of problem is most commonly caused by a timing conflict.

Solution:
Most timing conflicts with POProxy.exe can be resolved by loading it from the Windows StartUp folder. Please follow, in turn, the instructions in each section.

Change POProxy.exe to load from the StartUp folder

Please follow these steps to do this:

1. Start NAV 2000, click Options, and then select Email Protection.
2. Uncheck the option "Enable Email Protection" and click OK. Click Cancel to any Norton AntiVirus Email Scanner Configuration dialog boxes that appear.
3. Exit all programs.
4. Right-click Start, and then click Open.
5. Double-click the Programs folder.
6. Double-click the StartUp folder.
7. Right-click in an empty area of the window, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
8. Browse to the Norton AntiVirus folder, for example, C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus
9. Double-click the POProxy.exe file.
10. Click Next, and then click Finish.
11. Restart the computer to allow POProxy to load from the StartUp folder, then go on to the next section.

Configure your email program

To set up your email program to use POProxy, please follow these steps:

1. Start your email program, for example, Netscape, Outlook, Pegasus, or Eudora.
2. Open the email program's options menu so you can modify your POP3 account settings. If you are not sure where to find these settings, refer to the documentation or the Help menu of your email software. For your convenience, the following documents provide information on how to set up some of the more popular email programs:

3. Write down all current settings. You will need these to properly configure the new settings.
4. Change the setting for the Incoming POP3 server to: 127.0.0.1
5. Change the setting for your POP3 username to your username, followed by a forward slash (no space), followed by your original Incoming POP3 server location. For example, if your username is gsmith and the Incoming POP3 server is mail.ispname.com, in the Username box you would enter: gsmith/mail.ispname.com
6. Save the changes and exit the email programs options.
